Her Campus LMU partnered with NBC to throw a Valentine’s Day themed viewing party Sunday, February 16. The chapter took a break from the chaos of college life to eat pizza and watch the series premiere of NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” and the season three premiere of “Good Girls.” After celebrating a holiday that revolves around love and gratitude, it was nice to wind down with our Her Campus galentines.

We earned the opportunity to throw this HC X NBC watch party because of our past successes hosting Her Campus events at LMU,” said Rylie Walsh, president of LMU’s Her Campus chapter. “When we hosted Break-Sesh last year, we ended up having a super great turnout and the event was a super fun way to raise awareness of who and what Her Campus LMU is as an organization on campus.”

We kicked off our viewing party by watching “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” NBC’s new musical dramedy centered around Zoey Clarke (Jane Levy), a computer coder whose life takes a musical turn after experiencing an earthquake during her MRI. As Zoey strolls down the streets of San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, strangers begin to express their innermost thoughts and feelings to her through song. This culminates in an extravagant musical number of “Help!” by The Beatles, which is brought to life by an ensemble of 70 performers.

Although frustrating at first, Zoey recognizes the hidden blessing in her psychic-like abilities. They ultimately allow her to connect with a mourning co-worker and her father, who suffers from a rare medical condition.

In a world where people keep their emotions bottled up too often, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist serves as a reminder to express your feelings and ask for help when needed. As Zoey explains to her co-worker Simon, “You can’t just keep it in.”

Once we finished “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” we tuned in to “Good Girls.” The bold drama series, already in its third season, follows the lives of three suburban mothers entangled in crime. Beth (Christina Hendricks) is left with few options after her cheating husband drives their family into a rough financial situation. Ruby Hill (Retta) has trouble affording her daughter’s kidney medication. Annie (Mae Whitman), a young single mother, needs to provide for her transgender son. These daring women will stop at nothing to protect their children.

The series has its fair share of thematic elements, but is infused with comedy. Although I had not seen “Good Girls” prior to the viewing party, I could appreciate the moments of humor (the women drowning cash in a bleach-filled, rainbow-colored baby swimming pool) and dark twists – I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so stream “Good Girls” to find out what I mean!

“Overall, [our watch party] was such a fun time and a great opportunity for our chapter,” said Walsh. “I’m so happy our chapter was selected to host this event and can’t wait to host more Her Campus events at LMU soon.”

Tune in to NBC on Sundays to watch Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist at 9 p.m. ET and Good Girls at 10 p.m. ET.
