First impressions say a lot before the other person really gets the chance to get to know you, so before you walk into an interview or log in to one online, what you’re wearing will speak volumes. Dressing professionally is crucial but you can also add a touch of uniqueness to your outfit as well. You still want to be able to stand out, right? There is a line you shouldn’t cross when it comes to being too unique. It can also vary depending on the work environment, as well. Either way, what you wear tells your future employer what kind of person you are, so here are a few tips on professional attire.
For the women:
During the first interview for a serious business in person, try to keep your look simple and neat. In terms of accessories, it would be in your best interests to go the subtle route. If you want to show a bit of your personality, you could wear something small that still makes a statement on your personality, such as butterfly stud earrings. When wearing a skirt or pants suit, opt for a dark color with a tailored jacket. If you choose to wear heels, keep it below five inches. The hairstyle should be tied back and out of the way. Lastly, makeup would best be kept to a natural look. However, if the environment is more on the casual side, it’s okay to get a little more unique with the accessories. The jacket can be a bit comfortable. The rest of the details are the same when going to a serious business meeting. Make sure to steer clear from a big purse, and pick a medium-sized one or a laptop bag. During a zoom interview, I assume it would be okay to focus on your look from the waist up. Although, it is always best to be prepared all the way!
For the men:
Same as before, it is best to keep your outfit clean and simple, as well as avoid any noisy accessories. For the suit, the shirt should be a light color that contrasts with a darker jacket and pants. Always go for a traditional solid color tie. Avoid the bowties! On the other hand, in a casual environment, no suit is necessary. Your future work may be more laid back, but dress pants are going to be the better option. Dress shirts are still preferred, and avoid open-toed shoes!Â
For all genders:
Until society becomes a bit more accepting of tattoos, I’m afraid you have to keep them covered. This rule goes with piercings, as well. If arriving in person, hats should stay at home or in the car. It is great to smell nice, but do not go overboard with the perfume/cologne! The shirt should not have any graphics and fit well. Last but not least, add a belt if you can to tie that whole look together!

Just to reiterate, these dress code guides can be modified based on the place you are applying for! It may be best to ask fellow employees or the hiring manager before the interview about the tone of the work environment. COVID has completely taken over the world. Businesses have to adjust quickly. Many people struggling to get a stable job. Nevertheless, we should not give up so easily! Hang in there, and I wish you the best of luck in this world!Â
