Rebecca Sugar is a multi-talented, non-binary woman who is very success in her career in the entertainment industry. She is perhaps best known for being the creator of the incredibly popular Cartoon Network original show, Steven Universe. Her work has made her the first woman in the major network history to independently create an original show. She actively discusses and champions the importance of LGBT representation in her work and in the family entertainment industry as a whole. There is no better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than to recognize and express my admiration for such a creative, groundbreaking role model like Rebecca Sugar.

Rebecca Sugar is a veteran in the world of family and children’s entertainment. She has experience as an animator, storyboard artist, director, screenwriter, producer, and songwriter. Early on, Sugar played important roles in several projects such as the short animated film, Singles, and the animated YouTube series, nockForce. However, her career really started gaining steam with her work on a different cartoon network original show, Adventure Time. Sugar worked primarily as a storyboard artist on the show, but she also used her talents as a songwriter to help create some of the show’s most iconic songs. Rebecca Sugar’s influence shined in the show through many of the characters like Marceline the vampire queen and Princess Bubblegum, who became icons in much the LGBT community for their strong presence as an LGBT couple in the show.

Her incredible work on Adventure Time helped her move towards her most recent creation, Steven Universe.  Here, Sugar took her creativity and activism to a whole new level, creating almost an entire show full of LGBT icons. Steven Universe’s refreshingly original story, lovable and colorful cast of characters, unforgettable original music, amazing voice acting, and countless other admirable qualities have solidified the show’s place alongside Adventure Time as one of the most beloved animated shows ever.

Much of Rebecca Sugar’s work has found success over the years, holding both critically acclaimed and social significance. Unfortunately, both Adventure Time and Steven Universe will have officially finished within the next year. However, there is no doubt that Rebecca Sugar will continue to channel her passion and create more, amazing work. Personally, I am more than excited to see what Rebecca Sugar will attempt to achieve next.
