Twenty nineteen is coming to an end, and the new year is just around the corner. As we enter a new decade, it’s time to start thinking about setting some New Year’s Resolutions! As many popular resolutions are fitness related, I usually make at least one resolution for myself that focuses on the physical fitness aspect of my lifestyle.

One way to set a resolution that feels possible and exciting to purse is by setting goals for intermediate steps towards the desired outcome rather than resolving to reach that outcome outright! For example, I may want to become faster, increase my lung capacity, reduce fat content, or get super toned calves, but I don’t make any of these my resolutions.

Instead, I will resolve to try to run twice a week, or take a walk whenever I have a free afternoon. These are more attainable goals. I feel less consumed and discouraged by tracking the progress, or potentially lack thereof, of my larger picture goals. Especially since many changes in our bodies and fitness abilities do not happen overnight!

Last year my resolution was to train for races. I didn’t focus on how fast I would race or how much weight I would lose, but just on making progress towards the next race. This year my resolution is to run one race per month near Louisiana Tech. These are a few races that I found that I plan to participate in.
