With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, I had the idea of learning to play a song on guitar for my mom and two grandmas. If you’re struggling to come up with a gift for Mother’s Day and you have the time, consider singing or playing one of my favorite “mom” songs. Even if you’re not musically inclined at all, a simple playlist would be perfect!
1. The Best Day – Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift knows how to write a song, especially for her mother. Taylor writes about her best days with her mom and how she is the only person she can truly count on. She recorded the song secretly and surprised her mother with it on Christmas Eve! The Best Day is featured on her second studio album, Fearless.
Favorite Lyric: And now I know why the all the trees change in the fall
I know you were on my side
Even when I was wrong
2. Butterfly Fly Away – Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus
This song was featured on Hannah Montana the movie when Hannah and her dad sang it together. Although the song seems to be written about a daughter’s love for her single father, I can’t help but imagine it with my mom instead. I grew up with a single mother, so it definitely hits home for me.
Favorite Lyric: You had to do it all alone, make a livin’ make a home
Must have been as hard as it could be
3. Songbird – Fleetwood Mac
Songbird is definitely in my top ten favorite songs of all time. It’s such a beautiful song with a beautiful meaning behind it. The song was written and sung solely by Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac. While I’m not sure of the actual meaning of the song, I love to interpret it as a person’s desire to make sure the other person always feels loved. A perfect song to showcase your unmeasurable love for your mom.
Favorite Lyric: And I wish you all the love in the world
But most of all, I wish it from myself
4. Baby Girl – Sugarland
I love the playfulness of this song. It’s not a super serious song and could just be something to have fun with. The song starts off detailing the struggles of living away from your parents, which I’m sure many of us can relate to. It’s not written specifically for mom, but it’d be super fun to sing with her in the car!
Favorite Lyric: Dear Mom and Dad,
Please send money, I’m so broke that it ain’t funny.
5. Two of Us – Louis Tomlinson
Louis Tomlinson wrote this song shortly after the tragic death of his mother. I know there are many people out there who may have lost their mother, so I wanted to include a song for them. Louis mentioned in an interview that he hopes the song can help at least one person going through a similar situation as him. The song perfectly captures feelings of grief but also a sense of hopefulness to get through the hard times.
Favorite Lyric: Tattooed on my heart are the words of your favorite song
I know you’ll be looking down
Swear I’m gonna make you proud
