Halloween 2020: Covid-19, Costumes, and Candy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Louisville chapter.

October 31st is right around the corner, but the scariest thing of Halloween 2020 isn’t witches or vampires, it’s the global pandemic knocking at our door. A lot of you must, like me, be trying to figure out your plans for this year. Here’s a few ideas on how you can be safe and have fun for a Covid-19 Halloween.

  • Home-oween Party: Stay in and stay safe with a few friends or your boo. This year is a perfect excuse to ditch the big parties and have a cozy night in. Cue up your favorite halloween movies, don some comfy clothes, and try out those fall recipes you’ve had saved on Pinterest since 2014. This is the best way to be sure you and your loved ones can avoid any extra tests or quarantining.

Look at the list below to check where you can find some of your favorite movies:

    • Netflix: Silence of the Lambs, Poltergeist, Sleepy Hollow

    • Amazon Prime: The Addams Family, Scream, A Quiet Place

    • Hulu: Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters, Coraline

    • Disney+: Hocus Pocus, Twitches, The Nightmare Before Christmas

  • Trick or Treat-yourself: If you do go out, (whether or not it’s allowed in your state) be sure to mask up and dress up! Luckily, costumes are perfect for wearing masks. Shop small Etsy shops for bedazzled face masks that bring out your inner princess, use simple disposable surgical masks to be a healthcare hero, or cater your mask to your own costume. If you’re in charge of tiny humans this year, make sure you keep them safe as well, and help teach them healthy and socially distant practices.

These are some of my favorite small Etsy shops for fun masks:

    • FabricFaceCovers: LED light up mask

    • LoveLinax: Tie-dye styles for all ages

    • BeWellGroup: All. The. Prints.

    • CynababySwimwear: Quality and sparkles to die for

  • Boo Bags: Make this year fun for others too, spend your Saturday filling dollar store gift bags for your neighbors, favorite essential workers, or friends and deliver a (sanitized and clean) spooky surprise on halloween night. Community is everything when getting through these disappointing changes in tradition, so look out for others when you can.

A few ideas for Halloween treats:

    •  Leave out individual trick-or-treater sized candy bags or cups

    • Ding-Dong-Ditch a friend and leave a basket of Halloween themed goodies at their door

    • Have a Zoom costume contest with your friends, showing off your home-bound fits

I hope you all have fun this Halloween, and get creative with alternative traditions and festivities! Go and get spooky!
