Mon Laferte is a Chilean singer and composer–you may know her from her recent Grammy win. Her albums have a variety of genres and even her songs have that versatility.  I found her music by mistake, but got immediately hooked, because the lyrics of her songs have a very  emotional meaning in any genre she sings.

Her songs:

She has composed a lot of feminist songs, love songs, and heartbreak songs. She has a great vocal range, and if you listen to her albums, she can be singing cumbia, mariachi, bolero or baladas. I feel like she displays her experiences in her songs, which not only makes her unique but also her audience can relate to her lyrics.

I would listen to Mon Laferte any time, she has a song for every mood: happy, sad, severely depressed, or nostalgic. When I listen to her I can feel I can let my emotions out by singing her songs out loud, with the music in the loudest volume possible.

Career and impact:

Mon Laferte has been recognized throughout Latin America and given many Latin awards, but recently she was given the Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Album. Her career is not only based on making music: she is a feminist and LGBTQ+ activist in Chile she is also involved in the Chilean politic fight. The most important thing about Mon Laferte is that she advocates for the people’s freedom, especially women’s freedom. This is what she said for an interview in Clarín, an Argentinian newspaper.

“I have learned and acquired new knowledge, and I have the desire to learn even more. I was not born a feminist but little by little I started to understand the cause. I am not the whole owner of the truth but I think everybody has the right to express themselves. So, when I think something is good I would say it and when I think something is wrong I would say it as well.”
