Favorite Alternatives to Your Favorite Snacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

Are you tired of eating the same old snacks and treats? Maybe you are trying to eat a little healthier but still have your cravings—I understand you because I do as well! These also work for great alternatives to unhealthy options. Today I come to you with a few new ideas for when you want something fun but still want it to be healthy.

1- Yogurt Fruit Pops

You can mix chopped up fruit into your favorite flavor of greek yogurt. Then, freeze it for a few hours. If you are craving chocolate, you can dip a banana into melted 80% dark chocolate, and then freeze it as well. Now you have a frozen-chocolate treat!

2- Kale chips

I have known about kale chips since middle school. We were doing a healthy food unit in health class and my teacher said she likes to make her own kale chips. No one had heard of them so she baked us a batch and brought it in for all of us to try. Now, I don’t seem to care for them. Instead, I go for seaweed which, to me, has a similar vibe. With kale chips, you are able to come up with different flavors. You can try Classic (oil, salt, and pepper), Sea Salt and Vinegar (self explanatory!), Cheesy (drizzles of vegan cashew cheese or sprinkles of nutritional yeast), or BBQ (paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, brown sugar, and dry mustard). Or you can make up your own! Try these next time you want to reach for that bag of potato chips.

3– Parmesan Popcorn

I have another nostalgic story to go along with this one. I had originally read that Parmesan popcorn is a good alternative for chips in an American girl health book. Over the years, since reading that, I have been inspired to come up with my own healthier creations for popcorn. I remember when I was  eleven I came up with a popcorn topping which included greek yogurt and paprika, amongst many other things! I love how with this recipe you can either have the cheese melted on top with all of the spices, or you can sprinkle everything right on top of your freshly popped corn!

4– Frozen Yogurt Covered Blueberries

These are fun and simple! You stick your blueberry on a toothpick and then dip your blueberry into flavored greek yogurt of your choice. Next, you stick them in the freezer and after an hour, you can enjoy them! I made these when I was really little and enjoyed them—so take my word for it!

5- Chocolate Peanut Butter Bites

My mom loves to make them, and I love to eat them. This treat is a staple in my house especially when I was in high school. I love it because there are different variations or “flavors.” My mom usually does a chocolate, peanut butter, oat combo or (my favorite) peanut butter, apples, cinnamon, honey combo.

I hope these new snacks and treats inspired you to try something different. I know I already have my favorites because I have made them myself! Be sure to click on the links to the full recipe. Ditch the cookies and chips for some sweet and savory fun!
