Nearly all of us have encountered ourselves laying in bed, searching for the right Netflix show to binge watch. However, would you not want to see a show that could provide historical value and fashionable sense while enjoying the drama and plot line of the characters? Well, I am about to share with you a list of five Netflix shows that will leave you filled with drama, history and fashion statements. Released on May 1st of 2020, this show targets issues from systemic racism, internalized homophobia, and the hardships a rising actor faces in order to make it to the big screen. Not only will you get the full experience of work life after World War 2, but fall in love with the characters as they discover their passions, talents and sexualities. The “Golden Age” of acting is not so golden when there is a big barrier called racism. You will see a white veteran who dreams of appearing on the big screen, a gay black screen writer who is deprived from his creation due to his skin colors and a talented black young lady that faces threats and harm for her skin color and her work in the big screen. Ranging from the clean slim below the knee dresses, and the victory suits wore by men, this shows offers much more than just a drama plot, but raises awareness on current pending issues while fashionably stating the class and elegance of the 1940s.

Looking into the glamorous yet dramatic life of the royal house of Windsor, The Crown is a Netflix original that tells us the intimate details of how Queen Elizabeth first ascended to power, to the controversy and delicate mental issues that Princess Diana battled while holding a royal title. We get to see the spark of jealousy that rises from the queen’s younger sister Margaret, the ongoing cheating scandal between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker, and the difficulties of state that England faces prime minister after prime minister. This show is exemplary and important for our current generation since it gives us historical insight and a woman in the 1950s who rose as a figure of power and respect to an entire nation. The viewer gets to learn from remarkable historical personages such as Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher, both outstanding in their roles as prime ministers. The Show begins narrating the life of the Queen, and advances all the way to her grand children: William and Harry. If you are a historical geek and a lover for drama then this show will be a perfect fit in your Netflix list.

Centuries ago, the importance of a lady being be-wed and unconditionally pure were imperative for marking up the future wealth and status of an entire family line. Bridgerton can be seen as a modern-historical approach from Gossip Girl, in which wealth and status are everything, best friends fall in love with the same guy, the ideal player falls in love with the innocent girl and someone from the outside is narrating and spreading all the rumors around town. This shows provide important historical context of the 19th century and the steps all girls must endure to be called a “success”. We learn of the involvement the queen has determining on who is the ideal lady, and the desperation mothers face when trying to match their daughter with the finest suitor, preferably of a royal status. This serie shows sparks of feminism by the urge to rebel agains just being a wife, while laying ground on the importance of male validation during this era. Adding all the drama, historical context and a pinch of sex, this show makes the perfect binge watcher.
