Life of an Intern: Learning the Ropes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

Internships have become such an important part of the undergraduate experience. They allow students to get a taste of what the professional world will be like after graduation while also acting as major resume boosters! But does anyone actually know the rules of interning from the start? Because if there is some kind of internship guide, please pass it along! While interning this summer, I quickly learned the rules of office and the definite do’s and don’ts of interning. So here are the top six things I learned as an intern.

1. Dress to impress! Dressing in a polished, professional and sophisticated (and fashionable, of course) manner will show that you are serious and ready to work alongside professionals. But, I know what you are thinking….

Don’t worry! Pairing simple pieces such as black slacks, a professional blouse and adorable accessories will take your style straight from “I have nothing to wear” panic to chic and stylish.

2. Learn about the company before you start your first day on the job. Remember Prior Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance!

3. Pay attention to proper office etiquette! There is nothing worse than an intern who doesn’t know when to stop talking while doing their work….

4. Always complete your work in a timely and precise manner. Your bosses will really appreciate and take note of how much effort you put into projects you hand in. It is extremely important to hand in complete and organized work!

5. Always be positive in the office and say yes to anything your boss asks you to do.

6. And most importantly, have fun! Interning is such an incredible experience where you get to learn about your profession hands on, so make sure you take advantage of this major learning experience.
