Ten Reasons It Is Acceptable to Be Basic for the Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

Fall will be here much sooner than later, let’s just hope that this cool weather starts up within the next few weeks! In fact, September 23rd is when it becomes socially acceptable to put our bikinis and shorts in the back of our closets and bring out the boots and the vests. I mean, let’s be honest here, there are only two major fall months before the weather starts becoming ridiculously cold and miserable. I am perfectly fine with being called “basic” for those two months due to my love of autumn and I know a majority of the females on this planet feel the same and here are the reasons why:

  1.  Clothes

Who doesn’t love the flannels, vests, leggings, and boots? It’s a “YES” in one combination! Along with the oversized sweaters and legwarmers comes the comfortable and stylish look of the perfect basic outfit. There are so many more options for for clothing and I do not think one person will end up wearing the same outfit twice. We can even break out those jerseys that have been in the back of our closets for these last few months. So ladies, mark payday on your calendars and start purchasing all items on your Pinterest Boards!

     2.   Sports

FOOTBALL, HOCKEY, BASKETBALL… does it get much better than this?! The “Boys of Fall” are back and if you love Kenny Chesney as much as I do, that is on the top of our tailgate playlists along with the latest songs from all the new albums dropping within the next few weeks! Get excited and join a fantasy league.

    3.   Halloween

It takes about two months for any basic girl to fully plan out and perfect the most creative costume. Let’s be honest, with Halloween falling on a weekend we have three days to dress up as whatever we want! Aside from the numerous costumes, we have themed parties to last us months as well as an endless supply of scary movies and televisions shows. By all means go binge watch every single one, tis’ the season, right?

     4.   Drinks

The steaming beverages… Pumpkin spice (anything with pumpkin), caramel, chocolate, cinnamon, the list can go on. Just head out to your local bar and I can guarantee they have some awesome flavored drinks on the menu. By local bar, I mean River City for those of you at Manhattan College.

     5.    Food

Anything warm and straight out of the oven, especially with pumpkin or apples (that is a major plus), chili, soups, fresh baked goodies, caramel apples, and well all the candy we can eat. Keep in mind overeating candy the next few months is also completely acceptable, so give a shout out to the 31st of October for making that possible! Check out the fun recipes I cannot wait to create!

     6.    Weather

Just being outside during the Fall is a giant breath of fresh air. The smell of of the crisp air, the leaves, the cool temperature, and of course the colors that Mother Nature creates and allows us to witness daily.  It is nothing but perfection, so go take a walk or travel and you will feel like you are in a painting.

     7.    Holidays!

The countdown to Thanksgiving and the rest of the holidays begin now… enough said! How many more Friday’s until Christmas?

     8.    Everything Fall!

Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hay rides, corn mazes, the farms… If you are from the middle of nowhere like myself, where there are farms every few miles, then it is almost religious to make an appearance there at least once a week. Then again, if you are unfamiliar with farms in a close distance to you, you can find some here!

     9.    The Perfect Day

Coming home to a lit fireplace and it being absolutely perfect, especially when you realize you will NOT need to put on that heavy winter coat, gloves, and hat the next morning.

   10.    The fall is like a fresh start for everything to begin again. Just as my old friend F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in The Great Gatsby, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall”

So let us enjoy the next few months because before we know it we will be crying over how we do not want to go to class because it is -22 degrees outside. Can’t it be Fall forever?
