When coming to college, one of the most important things to decide is picking a major. Nowadays, there is a huge emphasis on the field of STEM (science, math, technology, engineering). STEM is great. It’s completely necessary for our society and so important (special shout out to the women majoring majoring in STEM fields!). But there has been a recent loss of value on the arts and humanities fields.
Arts and humanities are equally important to STEM fields. They encourage critical thinking, exploration of the world, and imagination. These skills are necessary for our society. Writing  and literacy, in particular, are so important. In both high school and college, many students are taught that going into STEM fields is the only way to be successful.
There has been this mentality put into people’s minds that people that study STEM subjects are “smarter” than those who do not. As a communications major, I have been told this multiple times. This is highly discouraging, and almost derogatory. Some people do not have brains geared toward math or science, and some have simply just have no  interest in those fields.
It’s time to stop criticizing other people’s majors and jobs. No matter what you do, college is challenging and everyone is working hard. There should be more emphasis on this in public schools and colleges. Let’s lift each other up instead of tearing each other down.
