10 Underrated Shows to Binge Watch on Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marist chapter.

1. Beauty and the Beast

This short-lived CW show is the perfect binge-watching material. All four seasons are on Netflix, and there is a ridiculously handsome Australian man – who is often half-naked. While it may appear to be an average damsel-in-distress drama, heroine Detective Cat Chandler does not need help saving herself. A forbidden love story that will grab you at the first sight of Vincent’s sexy scar, Beauty and the Beast will fulfill all of your binge-watching needs.

2. Nikita

Old CW shows happen to make great for great Netflix-sessions. Nikita is a bada** protagonist who spends the 40 minutes she is on your screen, kicking butt. Your motivation in life will become shipping Nikita and Michael (Shane West from A Walk to Remember), guaranteed.

3. Revenge

Another awesome leading lady that also kicks some serious a**, Emily/Amanda (it’s a long story), is manipulative, sassy, and elegant. She will become your ultimate role model. On a quest to destroy the woman who separated her from her father, Emily/Amanda will inspire you to make some enemies just so you can start your own path to revenge.

4. Orphan Black

Okay, so this series isn’t on Netflix, but it is available on Amazon Video – free with an Amazon Prime subscription. You will come to love Tatiana Maslany who plays literally every character on the show. It is amazing how you can watch several characters interact, and completely forget that the same actress is playing them. A fast paced clone-drama from the BBC, Orphan Black is sure to be your next addiction.

5. Parenthood

Although not underrated when it aired on NBC, Parenthood follows the stories of the generations of the Braverman family – led by Craig T. Nelson, accompanied by Lauren Graham and Dax Shepherd. This family will make you laugh, cry, and then cry again (especially during the series finale). An amazing show that you cannot go wrong with.

6. White Collar

Matt Bomer can do more than strip (see: Magic Mike XXL). It is impossible not to love the gorgeous specimen that is Matt Bomer as a fast-talking, good-hearted criminal. You will love Neal and Peter’s bromance, and fall more in love with Matt Bomer than you already are.

7. Emily Owens, M.D.

While this show only lasted one season, it was a lighthearted version of Grey’s Anatomy. If you’re desperate for something to watch, I recommend giving Mamie Gummer a chance to earn your heart, in the most awkward way she knows how.

8. The Carrie Diaries

Oh, The Carrie Diaries, how you were gone too soon. While we can all agree that the first season of Carrie Bradshaw’s pre-Sex and the City life was much better than the first, this show just didn’t have a chance to flourish! However short, The Carrie Diaries will keep you entertained…for maybe a day, depending on your binging speed.

9. Chasing Life

Italia Ricci (Supergirl, Designated Survivor) slays the role of April Carver, a newly diagnosed cancer patient. Surprisingly, her battle for her life does not dominate the show. The Carver family life and subsequent storylines drive the plot, and keep you interested beyond the first episode. Highly recommend for binge-watching.

10. Stardust (Movie)

While it isn’t a show you can binge-watch, this movie available on Netflix is *so* underrated. Starring Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Claire Danes (Homeland), and Robert Deniro (Um, everything), Stardust is an enjoyable tale of a boy from the other side of the tracks (or in this case, wall). It is heartwarming, hilarious (with Deniro as a gay pirate), and moving. I would highly recommend for a girl’s night in – or just a you-in-your-bed-night-in.
