Senior Ashley Morris recently had the honor of accepting the “Club of the Year” award on behalf of the Marist College Singers. This year, Morris served as the club’s president – a proper culmination to her four years spent as a devoted member. Check out the details of her journey with Marist Music and her take on the club’s win.
HC: What is your major/minor?
AM: I’m a Public Relations major and a Vocal Music minor.
HC: In addition to the Marist Singers, what other clubs/organizations are you involved in at Marist?
AM: I’m a member of Sirens (Marist’s female a cappella group) and I’m a Kappa Kappa Gamma sister. In the past, I was also an active part of the Chapel Choir which I loved.
HC: What brought you to Marist Singers?
AM: I sang throughout high school, so I wanted to sing wherever I went to college. I remember visiting Marist during Open House four years ago, sitting in the McCann gym, and being in awe of the Singers’ school spirit. I had also seen the Sirens and their pink pashminas, so a cappella became something I hoped to be a part of when I got to Marist. I imagined I would meet some of my best friends in Singers and I definitely have.
HC: What does it mean to you to be a Marist Singer?
AM: To me, being a Marist Singer means being a part of the bigger Marist community. I’ve loved being able to represent the school and to perform for my classmates at various events over the past four years. Being a Marist Singer also means sharing a love for music. My favorite Singers moments have always been the ones when we’re all singing together on the risers.
HC: What prompted you to run for the position of Singers President?
AM: My love for this club. I knew being president would be hard work, but it would also be fun. I’d already been on the board for two years, so I ran for president! I can’t imagine my senior year any differently.
HC: What was your reaction to winning “Club of the Year”? Do you have more details about the honor?
AM: I cried. I don’t remember exactly what was said, but Singers really had an awesome year. Between “Night on Broadway” and “Love in the Afternoon,” we raised more than $12, 000 for charity. Club of the Year is chosen by SGA and it’s the top honor a club can receive, so the whole club is excited about it. We’ve all worked hard.
