Becca Osmolski is a Sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences studying Criminology and Law, as well as Women and Gender studies. She is a member of the Dorothy Day Community and volunteers at the Sojourner Family Peace Center, which is a non-profit organization service victims of interpersonal violence.Â
Becca took a class called Domestic Violence in the U.S. taught by Dr. Stroshine. As a survivor of childhood domestic violence, Becca was naturally drawn to this coarse. In this class, she read a book called Tornado Warning by Elin Stebbins Waldal. This book presents a relatable, realistic picture of what life is like for victims of intiment partner violence. According to Becca, this book makes a taboo topic very relatable. The heroine in the story and victim of the abuse fights with the choice to leave a man that seems so normal to most people. She’s from a small, traditional town, where leaving her partner was not an option. Becca believes this story is a must read for understanding how women feel when in an abusive situation.Â
This story was so moving that Becca reached out to the author. Fortunately enough, Ms. Waldal agreed to come speak on Marquette’s Campus. She will discuss domestic violence and its unhealthy presence in the media today, as well as how to recognize the numerous types of abuse. Several organizations on campus are partnering with Becca to create this event. Check back to HCMU for more details as the event approaches, but the presentation is scheduled for early February.Â
If Becca’s story has inspired you, get involved! Volunteer to help with the new Gender and Sexuality Resource Center or educate yourself and your peers about the issues at hand. According to Becca, begining a converstation about this ever present problem on college campuses is a great way to prevent future abuse.
Remember, if you are a victim of domestic violence or know someone who may be in danger, please seek help.Â
