How to Survive a Milwaukee Winter as Told by a Wisconsinite

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marquette chapter.

Well, with the temperatures taking a plummet and sprinkles of snow starting to appear, winter is upon is! Time for hot cocoa, building snowmen, warm fireplaces, and the windy blizzard vortex that is Milwaukee. If you are from Wisconsin or the Midwest, you are more than prepared for the arctic-like conditions we are about to experience. If you are not used to a Midwest winter and are wondering what to wear to keep yourself from turning into a human icicle, here are few things to invest in.

Thermal Leggings.

Like wearing leggings, but hate how a breeze just goes right through the thin fabric? Say hello to these bad boys, thermal leggings (or also called fleece leggings). They are fuzzy on the inside to keep your legs warm and cozy, even when making the trek through the Cobeen/Carpenter wind tunnel.

Actual winter boots.

Think you spiffy Hunter boots will do the trick? Think again. Try and purchase a durable pair of high-quality winter boots. Marquette usually salts the sidewalks like crazy, and you don’t want to destroy your nice Uggs or Hunters. Winter boots are good for walking in a snow blizzard and keeping your feet nice and dry.

Down Jacket.

I know Patagonia sweaters are warm and all, but you need a down jacket with pockets for winter around here. North Face is a pretty popular brand. They keep you warm and they are usually wind and water resistant, which helps with the lake effect we get. You will use it throughout your entire college career at Marquette, so you can splurge a little bit and get a high quality coat. Plus, this male model wants you to stay warm with a down jacket. Don’t disappoint the hot male model.

Hats, gloves, and scarves.

The first thing to get cold are always my hands and ears. Invest in a nice wool hat (or headband) and some thick gloves or mittens. Complete the look by purchasing a big wool scarf.

Warm, cozy vest.

Is the weather too cold to just wear a long sleeve, but not cold enough to break out the parka? Whip out your vest! Vests are a solid choice for unpredictable Milwaukee fall and winter weather. They keep the core of your body warm, and usually have pockets to stick your hands in. Vests can also vary: you can purchase a wool one with a fuzzy hood, or something thin and sporty from North Face. The possibilities are endless!

Hand and feet warmers.

These little packets of happiness can keep your little hands and feet warm for up to 8 hours on your walk around campus (or even in class). You can stick these in your pocket to keep you hands warm all day! They’re perfect for waiting outside the Bradley Center on game day.

Towards the end, you might look like this and take 35 minutes to undress in class, but you will be warm and cozy while walking in the arctic tundra that is a Wisconsin winter.
