Countless sorority girls would be able to give you a never ending list of why they love Greek life and why you should join too. With the lingering spirit of recruitment week covering every inch of campus, I started thinking about the other side of things.
While many girls go through this long, hard week and find themselves at Bid Day running to their new sisters, there are also the girls who aren’t there. Some got halfway through recruitment and found that it wasn’t their niche and some didn’t even choose to go through recruitment in the first place. Whatever your case may be, it’s easy to feel like the outcast. It might seem like every girl in the world is in a sorority, but the reality is it’s just not for everyone. Many girls even join sororities and then later realize it’s not where they want to be. And it’s totally fine.
There’s always a little pressure going around to join Greek life, and although it might not be explicitly said out loud, there’s a vibe that you have to go Greek to have friends. Don’t let it get to you. Especially at a school like Marquette where there’s a million different clubs available left and right, there’s no need to stress. If you don’t find your home within Greek life, you’ll find it somewhere else. College is the perfect time to do some deep digging and figure out what your true interests and passions are. Go to O-Fest, explore your options, and reach out to new people. It’s scary, but at the end of the day we’re all in the same boat trying to make the most of our time here and find a place we belong. Greek life might be the most obvious choice, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best one for you and that’s okay.
