Step aside boys! And make way for a wave of fresh faced females in the music scene. These 4 female artists are definitely ones to keep your eyes on. From up-beat feminist pop, to down-tempo synthy R&B, these ladies from all over the globe are up and coming. You should expect to see more from these talented women very soon, but until they hit main stream radio waves (if they ever do) you can follow them on their social media from Soundcloud to Instagram and everything in between!
1. @momomoyouth
Karen Marie Ărsted is MĂ (donât worry, I canât pronounce it either). She is a Danish singer-song writer who makes electro-pop with an edge! Heavy filtered vocals, hip-hop kick drums, and bad girl lyrics âYou said I was your beat, what the f**k! Save it for the girl you likeâ flourish her unique glam-punk identity. Marked with a signature ponytail braid on her head, MĂ rocks a youthful punk look (just check out her Insta). Inspired by her up-brining, she sings about being young and free, as well as love and heart break like in her single âWaste of Timeâ. MĂ has recently been on tour playing festivals following her debut album release No Mythologies to Follow. She has also been featured on the Avicii track âDear Boyâ. If youâre not listening to MĂ then you should be! Her sound will definitely shake up your playlist.
2. @holychild
Ok, so Holychild isnât quite a girl band, but front woman Liz Nistico surly runs the show of this âbrat-popâ duo. Based in LA, their hard-hitting glittery tracks encompass the good vibes and party attitude of the city. Tracks like âBest Friendâ and âHappy With Meâ will get you on your feet and grooving! Although Holychild sounds like a never ending beach party, Nistico pulls in feminist messages to her lyrics. Their debut EP Mindspeak opens with the lyrics âIâll never give it all to you/the damselâs not my story tooâ expressing her independence as a women (you go girl!). Much like their bubbly colorful sound, Nisticoâs personal style is fun and very LA. You can expect to catch her wearing something cropped with platform sandals. Holychild played Firefly Music Festival this summer and have been working on a new live set for their upcoming tour. This is a duo you should totally be following! Not just for their fun feminist power tracks, but for Nisticoâs always cool style updates.
3. @banoffeemusic
Banoffee (yes like banana and toffee) is a smooth R&B-esque solo project by Martha Brown. This Melbourne native is signed to local independent artists-ran label Two Bright Lakes. She just kicked off her tour after releasing her self-titled EP in late August. Banoffeeâs rhythmic melodies are backed with cool percussive beats. Her lyrics are sentimental and poetic. âI will reign down since you let me goâ she sings in a more up-beat track âReign Downâ, while in her first single âNinjaâ she sings, âIf the winterâs got you shaking I will be your blanketâ, and âI will never let you bring me downâ. Banoffee is a little more underground, so following her is certainly the move!
4. @SkyFerreira
If you havenât already heard of Sky Ferreira then you can thank me later. This 21 year old pop-rock star released her debut full length album Night Time, My Time last year following several EPs and other musical ventures. Ferreira, signed at 15, had been floating around the charts for several years without an album to show for due to label issues. In 2012 her single âEverythingâs Embarrassingâ off her second EP Ghost got favorable reviews and things were looking up for her career. Night Time, My Time is a cohesive album with universal yet reflective songs. Opening track âBoysâ puts you back in high school when crushes used to rule your life. Some tracks are more personal like âNobody Asked Me (If I Was Okay)â but still resonate to listeners who can relate to the feeling of not being heard. Ferreiraâs sound on Night Time, My Time mimics her edgy girl look. With a modeling background, Ferreira always has a good outfit on (or a new hair style). Other than her music, she seems like a rad down to earth chick! Just check out her Instagram and Twitter and youâll find an array of internet-raised-teen posts.
