Here we are, collegiates! Back in our college town of Huntington, WV, ready to mingle with our friends after a month long break, use the rec to get in shape for Spring Break, and ready for the new year to really begin. Despite that classes are up and going again, you are one semester closer to graduating; but before you rush graduation too quickly, remember that this is the time of our lives. We will never be as young as we are now, and as soon as we graduate (if we don’t go to grad school), we step into the real world.Â
I have some little tips of advice I want to offer you. Do with it what you will, but I am an advocate for making the most out of your college experience.Â
- Join a club/team/organization.
Be on the lookout this semester for any thing you may be interested in being a part of. Getting involved in school is such an important thing to do. I 100% guarantee that you will get a better college experience by participating.
A few examples are the multiple religious organizations you can be a part of (BCM, Cru), joining the Her Campus team (send an email to marshall@hercampus.com), or even joining the THUNDER dance committee (the 24 hour marathon will take place this April!).
- Use the rec weekly.
You may not know it, but included in your tuition is the whopping $200 rec fee. You also may not be into running or lifting weights, but that’s not all that the rec has to offer. There are so many free classes you can attend that are FUN! Zumba, yoga, belly dancing, boxing, and butts and guts are just a few of your many options. Get fit this new year and feel good about yourself all the time. *Download the free MURec app to your phone to access day/time options for the classes!*
- Rush a sorority.
Sorority isn’t for everyone, but it never hurts to go through recruitment. You will meet a lot of new people, and even if you decide not to join, those girls won’t shun you! If you really made a connection with some girls, get their numbers and meet up! *Spring recruitment is upon us!*
- Go to parties (even if you don’t drink).
Partying has a negative connotation, but it’s a great way to meet new people. No one is going to pressure you to drink or do anything you don’t want to do. Parties are more fun if you can remember them, anyway. You’ll definitely meet people you probably won’t meet in class, and no one cares if you want to dance like a fool to the loud bass music. It’s always worth a try!
- Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
When you step out of your comfort zone, you open up a whole new world of possibilities. You might be surprised what you actually enjoy when you attend universities functions instead of opting to stay in your room and watch Netflix.Â
Be brave this new year. Meet new people and don’t be afraid to have fun. Always remember to study and keep your grades up though, because you’ll regret all the fun you had when you end up neglecting school and failing a class.Â
Here’s to 2015!
