Ever wanted to carry a bucket of water on your head for a mile? Nah? Well, what if I told you lots of women and girls, and even men, too, don’t particularly want to either, but for them, it’s the only way, as their water source is sometimes miles away? While they are walking, no doubt, many dream of being in school instead. While they are walking, they may be hoping the water they are carrying isn’t contaminated. While they are walking, they may dream of a life where there is stability of food, water, shelter, etc.
This is just one hardship many face living in extreme poverty. Today 1.44 billion people live in these conditions, lacking meaningful choices. We believe that these girls shouldn’t have to walk miles to fetch water and should get to go to school. We believe hard working farmers should have access to financial stability opportunities. We believe that no parent should have to choose which child gets to eat tonight. We believe that by walking and partnering with Nuru International, we can end extreme poverty. These are just some of the reasons #whywewalk.
We invite you to join us in this unique event. Our walk is at the MU student center plaza around the fountain on Sunday, April 26th @ 2:30pm (come a little early to get signed in!). We will begin here and walk a mile around campus. $5 entry fee (day of) as well as t-shirts ($18) and other items for sale. WMUL will be providing music, and we will have a rally at the end. Event is rain or shine because, after all, what we are mimicking is a task that is also rain or shine!
100% of the proceeds benefit Nuru International. Nuru works to address chronic hunger, financial shocks, unnecessary disease and death (like sickness and death resulting from drinking unsafe water), and lack of education opportunities for young children. Nuru does not give handouts, but instead focuses on training local leaders to help their communities make meaningful choices in their lives–choices you and I take for granted every day.”
We’d love for you to pre-register so we have an accurate bucket count. You can do so here:Â http://tinyurl.com/NuruWaterWalk
*It is recommended that you bring a towel or tshirt to the event as the bucket may be too hard on your head.*
