Cycling, otherwise known as spin, classes at UMD are held in the Regents Drive Garage cycling studio. This hidden gem is a great facility with large screens that show scenic biking routes, colorful lights and state-of-the art stationary bikes. There are a variety of classes available with different instructors, all of which can be found UMD RecWell’s website.

There are two cycling classes for terps to take, Cycle 45 and Cycle 55. Both classes are described as non-impact workouts for all fitness levels that mix speed and resistance. The only difference is the length of the classes, 45 minutes and 55 minutes respectively. There is also Intro To Cycling, which is offered at limited times, and weekly themed rides.

Cycling is a fun, high energy, full-body workout. Nusheen Majidi, a UMD cycling instructor explained that cycling is “an awesome cardio workout and (is) also great for muscular endurance and also building muscle on the legs.” The workout is also far from intimidating, so do not let the fear of starting hold you back. Majidi also added that “It’s really great for beginners especially because it’s so easy to modify… a lot of times in other classes maybe the movements are a little more technical and hard to modify, but with spin you can easily just go slower, you can easily lower the resistance, you can easily take a break.”

There is more than just physical health benefits to cycling. The loud music, bright lights and upbeat atmosphere make cycling one of the most fun workouts available on campus. Freshman psychology major, Taylor Leonhardt said, “I like them because you can adjust it to your own pace and the instructors are extremely motivating.”  Personally, I love the workouts. They are a great escape from hectic college life as it it time to have fun and take care of your health. Every time I see those glowing lights and hear the music pumping through the speakers, I know that I am going to have a great time. There is really no way to describe the supportive environment and genuinely happy environment that cycling class is. I have never left a class feeling disappointed. The time is now to try cycling class at UMD, head over to Regents Drive garage to try it out for yourself.
