Super Foods to Keep You Focused for Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

With final exams imminent, you’ll need all the help you can get to make up for the lack of sleep you’re getting. Try these foods out to help you stay focused. The more you get done, the faster you can get to a beautiful, peaceful slumber without worry.

Avocado

If your brain is feeling foggy, avocado can help. Monounsaturated fats in avocado help support information carrying nerves, suggests the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology. You can eat it by itself, or with sandwiches, salads, or dip! Whatever your finals deprived mind wants.

Salmon

Fresh salmon helps your focus but also your problem-solving abilities. It’s filled with omega-3 fatty acids that help sustain concentration during long periods of work. The acids also work towards increased brain networking and sharpening of the mind.

Leafy Greens

Yes, salad may not sound as appetizing as coffee but leafy greens are proven to help focus. According to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, greens like spinach, kale, and collard greens are high in antioxidants and B vitamin folate, which helps keep your brain sharp as you age. This means by eating greens, you help your present focus and your focus ability for the long run!

Blueberries

Blueberries are a great study snack. They give about 14 percent of your daily fiber, which helps maintain hunger. Maintaining hunger is key to maintain focus. It easily distracts you and eating too much can often make you as slow. Feeling sluggish while studying is never good, so keep a small bowl of blueberries nearby! Try them frozen, for more of a crunch.

Water

Before you reach for another can of Monster or Red Bull, try a glass of water. It may sound basic, but sometimes lack of focus is caused by dehydration. All your hard brainwork can make you tired and not motivated. Water is also proven to help your skin feel and look healthier – making you look amazing even though you pulled three all-nighters in a row.

Fruit and Nut Trail Mix

Nuts and fruit are a great combination during study days. The fats in the nuts give sustainable energy, while fruits give you that quick energy to keep you awake. Combining them is the key to surviving late nights spent at McKeldin.
