For junior Liz Lane, summer fashion is a time to embrace the warm weather and show some skin in a classy and modest way.
“Lighter colors and fabrics are all part of my signature repertoire and every fall and winter season is just a count down to when I can rotate my wardrobe again,” Lane said.
Sophomore Elizabeth McKelvy agreed that summer is her favorite season for fashion simply because she “hates pants.”
“Shorts mean full bottom underwear. Warm weather is just easier to dress for in general. I work in the summer too so I have money to buy clothes in the summer more so than I do during the winter,” McKelvy said.
Below are some of this season’s top trends of the season found on the runways and in your local Forever 21!
1. High-Low Skirts and Dresses
“This season I’m really into the high-low skirts. I like that they’re funky but flattering at the same time. Depending on how high they go in the front, in can be really sexy to show some serious leg but still be covered up too,” Lane said.
Pair a high-low skirt with a simple tank top and boots, wedges or flats for an effortless, put-together look.

2. Mint Green
Among other pastels, mint green is making its way on to handbags, tops, dresses, and nail polish for spring and summer, but it isn’t replacing the royal blues and emerald greens that were a hit this winter.
McKelvy said mint green is a part of her favorite color scheme so she is happy to find this color everywhere in stores.

Lane is also a fan of the hue.
“I am in love with the mint green. I think it stands out in just the right way but isn’t as jarring as a neon. It’s so flattering and feminine. It can really look good on any skin tone and with any hair color, so it’s perfect,” she said.

3. Black and White
Black and white is returning to the color scheme this season, making for classy pieces that are perfect for summer internships and for going out with friends. The mint greens and pastels may be in, but you can never go wrong with the classic black and white.

4. Cutouts
“Peekaboo pieces”, as Glamour calls this latest trend, can be done for a sexy nighttime look or for a modest daytime occasion. For an evening out, go for a simple dress with daring side cutouts, and for an afternoon look, try a maxi skirt with a side slit. Sheer tops are also a great way to show a little skin without bearing it all.

5. Bold Stripes
From Marc Jacobs to Dior, the spring runways were filled with tops, dresses and skirts covered with thick stripes. This is a trend that’s here to stay. Wear a navy striped top with jeans for a classic, nautical look or choose to be more daring with a striped suit or dress.

6. Peplums:
Peplum tops and dresses have been popular through the fall and winter, but they are certainly not going anywhere this spring and summer.
Lane said they accentuate the best womanly features and can camouflage “that midsection everyone things they have a problem with.”
“It’s awesome and can just give women that little boost of confidence needed to rock any outfit,” she said.
