We live in a world of people, of fast traveling information. In this extensive game of telephone we’re playing, some are bound to hear the wrong message. Social Media has taken storm to the events that occurred this past weekend, and much of the content was a disgusting display of ignorant, anonymous human nature. People think that over the computer they are brave, but using social media to convey your prejudice and hateful opinions is plain cowardice.
I live in a selfish world. A selfish world where people compete for a struggle of who is more charitable or worth more attention than others. I see the world I live in as losing focus on what is important. We are people who bleed the same blood, yet we put priority over some lives instead of others.
I live in a world where, as a woman, I am denied equal pay and choice over what happens to my body, and as a person of color I am denied the opportunity to live the American dream. When I try to do something about it, as a woman I am called a bitch and as a person of color I am told to stop complaining and respect authority. Both groups face suffrage, yet rather than trying to appease overall suffering, I am forced to pick which one of these means more to me. Something I have learned is that as a minority of a minority, I’m going to lose either way.
My world is full of hate. If I choose one side that means I must work towards the demise of the other. I cannot see the opinions of both sides. In my world I cannot be in a room with my boyfriend without white people staring, wondering what is wrong with him, and black people looking at me as a traitor. My world is full of mass shootings in schools, and bombings on innocent city centers to further push an agenda that no one is really sure about. People are encouraged to give their opinions on these public matters (which is fine) but no one takes into account how their words may affect others.
My world of hurtful word, often times results in devastating actions. Because some black people participate in deviant behavior does not make me a thug, so that does not give the police a right to assume this and assault me. Similarly just because some people who are associated with a religion are violent extremists, that does not mean that ever person affiliated with that religion are terrorists. That does not justify pushing an innocent woman in front of a train based off of an assumption, or claiming to shoot people of a certain group on a campus.
I don’t know what world you think you live in, but this is the reality, and it is really disappointing.
This could be the generation to change our world. With the rate people connect and share ideas, it is truly an amazing thing to behold. Let’s use our powers for good instead of evil. We should be spreading positive vibes, instead of hateful dispositions. Don’t discount someone’s struggles without evaluating your privilege. No one’s strife is better or worse than another’s…at the end of the day suffering is suffering. When I lay my head down at night I don’t pray for one over the other, I pray for the world.
We as humans have the power to make this world to be anything we want, my vote is against the divided, burning wasteland.
