How to Combat the Winter Break Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marymount chapter.

With winter break fast approaching are you worried about how you’ll combat those winter break blues, especially since you will be away from all of your friends from school? Have no fear; I have some helpful tips on how to make your winter break merry and bright!

1. Reconnect With Old Friends

I know that going home for a whole month, after being in college for a semester can be super hard. You are no longer with your friends from school and you have to develop a whole new routine, but at least you can sleep in late. Right? Well in order to keep up with the old pace of things I suggest that you reconnect with your friends back home. Go see a movie, grab some dinner, or just hangout. Regardless of what you do, it is sure to be a great time and it will give you all a chance to catch up with one another and share your crazy college stories.

2. Get a Job

For some people I know this may not be the most fun thing to do, but it beats staying at home alone every day. Last year during winter break, I was hesitant at going back to my old job, but almost all of my friends were working and I was going to have to spend time alone during the day if I did not work.  Going back to work is actually great, especially if you enjoy what you do and the people you work with. Going back to work allowed me to have adult conversations and to catch up with my co-workers.

3. Spend and Enjoy Time With Family

Winter break is the best time to enjoy and spend time with your family. After all, you really haven’t seen much of them the last few months.  Go out of your way to bake with your mom or watch a sporting event with your dad. Decorate the tree with your siblings and watch a Christmas movie you’re your entire family. They will enjoy it more than you know and time spent as a family will be the best Christmas present your parents receive.

4. Go on a Road trip

This idea may be a little out there, but it is sure to be a blast. Gather up some friends and take a trip to somewhere you have always wanted to go. It can be as far away or as close as you like. You can even go visit friends from school and see what it’s like where they live. All you need is some gas in the car, a little bit of money, and some yummy snacks. You can even document the trip by taking lots of pictures.  A road trip will sure make for a winter break you will not forget!

I hope these tips are sure to make your winter break more cheerful and to keep you away from the funk you are afraid of getting in. Have a wonderful break!
