So You’re Going Through a Break-Up…

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marymount chapter.

Let me just say this: I’m so sorry. I know you’re hurting pretty badly right now. But I wrote this for you, so let me take your hand and give you some songs that will help you remember how much control you have. You can take this pain and channel it into some dope Taylor-Swift-money-making way. She’s the queen of taking heartbreak and making something beautiful from it, while simultaneously making the idiot that messed with her look like an even bigger idiot as she rolls in the dough. Basically that is my hope, wish, and dream for you. I hope this helps.

Demi Lovato- Really Don’t Care

Demi hits hard in this song, like you can hear the anger in her voice, and I love it. Get angry. With Demi, of course. This is her anthem saying that the dude that hurt her deserves literally nothing and regardless of what he says or how she misses him, it’s over. And she really doesn’t care.

Robyn- Dancing on My Own

This song. This song is that song that I simultaneously cry and laugh and dance to. Have you seen “Girls”? Remember the scene where Hannah dances to this in her room? That’s what I think of every time I hear this song. Robyn sees the guy she thought was the shit with another girl, states that it hurts, doesn’t understand how she’s not the one being taken home after all she’s given him, and she says something beautiful. She’s like screw it, I’m going to keep dancing on my own.

Kelly Clarkson- Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)

I KNOW that you know this song. But right now this is the perfect time to sit down and listen to this word for word. Kelly just gets it. Honestly every time I listen to this song I want to pay her or hug her or something. Right now sucks, but in order to grow flowers, you gotta break the ground a little bit.

Prince- Raspberry Beret

So when you can’t get out of bed in the morning, you don’t want to get yourself together, you’re just spiraling down, please put this one. It’s just fun. Start dancing and let Prince help you get through your morning. Or afternoon. Or night.

Mario ft. Gucci Mane- Break Up

A really brilliant friend quoted the equally as brilliant Gucci Mane to me one time when I was really upset about some idiot boy that did some idiot thing to my heart (Taylor Swift shout out: You know who you are). Anyways, that song is straight brilliance due to Mario’s vocals and the beat itself. Gucci specifically had some words that might help you out: “On to the next one, fishes in the sea, girls are like buses, miss one next 15 one comin’”.  If you really think about it, it’s true. So listen to some Gucci, hang out at the bus stop, give it 15, and you’ll find someone better. What would Gucci do?

Shontelle- T-Shirt

This is the only song that I’m going to suggest to you that may invoke some sad feelings. Shontelle breaks it down, she puts into a song how hard it is to go out after you lose someone and how you’d rather be in their T-shirt. It’s a really sweet song, but its upbeat so it’ll give you some feels without too many feels, you feel? If it helps, think what you could do with said T-shirt from said moron. You could slash it, sell it, burn it, etc. Really get creative on this one.

Nicki Minaj- Boss Ass Bitch

If it wouldn’t be super weird and out of context to just write every lyric in this song in a letter and send it to your old flame, then I would say do it. This is your new anthem. Put it on repeat because you are one – and you and the world need to know this.

Your heart may be broken but listening to these songs may bring you some comfort. One person hurt you a whole lot, they caused some serious damage in your life. But you’re one person too. You have the exact same capability to cause an insurmountable amount of people happiness, joy, and love. So the next time that scumbucket has you feeling awful and you’re thinking about the good, the bad, what could’ve been, should I text him, is he thinking of me, etc. … remember that he’s one person that needs time to seriously learn about how to care about another. Your heart is full of care right now (you’re a million steps ahead of him) and it’s your duty to share it with the world. You’re going to be just fine, you really are.

Whenever you feel really sad, lonely, deserted, unloved… remember that I’m here. Seriously. But more importantly, remember that Gucci Mane is here. And then you won’t be sad or lonely anymore.
