There’s a Free Party at the Health Department… And You’re Invited

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marymount chapter.

Whenever I watch a college related movie or show, there is always some type of scandalous sex going on. Not always, but I’m usually picking up on this theme that college kids (especially males) are animals in heat and are constantly fornicating with each other. Then I started going to school and saw that a lot of girls and guys were having pretty frivolous sex with one another (possibly inspired by the same movies?). I’m not saying that’s wrong- who am I to judge? Do you, have fun, make smart decisions, protect yourself, and be safe.

There’s a million ways to protect yourself, not just physically, but also emotionally. One aspect that I spent some time thinking about, that I hadn’t heard talked about from people on campus, was getting tested. Sexually transmitted diseases are joked about and most people know of them and their general side effects, and then make the judgment that the person who has them should be on leper status.

For my job I had to be tested multiple times, and I wasn’t too thrilled about it. In fact, I was really embarrassed and was definitely dreading it. But I’m here to tell you that it was painless (emotionally and physically), free! All of the people that I have come in contact at the different departments were really cool and very knowledgeable.

If you go to the Health Department in your area, you’ll be able to get tested for free. Maybe check out the website first, make a call and let them know what you’re looking for, and set up an appointment. They’re helping people from all over the area and they have seen a lot- so don’t be nervous. The people there are trained medical professionals that aren’t going to remember you, so ask questions, go crazy and get tested for the whole rainbow of STD’s and STI’s. Try and gain as much information as you can!

Your sex life is completely unique and specific to you- no one should have a say about how you live your life. But I do urge you to remember how precious you are and take care of yourself. Your health is everything. Getting your nails done for girls’ day out is overrated- try taking it to the health department… and then get your nails done!
