Sleep Tips for the Collegiette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marywood chapter.

College is a stressful time where students find themselves making the daily decision of getting enough sleep or accomplishing everything they need to. Entrepreneur, Arianna Huffington wrote “The Sleep Revolution” with the hope of educating individuals about the importance of healthy sleep habits. After reading her book, I found some of her advice especially relatable for collegiettes. Although they seem simple, they can make all the difference in changing your life for the better.

1. Keep your room cool and dark: Temperature is everything! Have you ever tried sleeping in a hot stuffy room? Not comfortable in the slightest.

2. No electronic devices thirty minutes before bed time: Although this seems impossible in our busy technological age, it can make all the difference in getting a proper night’s rest.

3. No caffeine after two o’clock: Put down that afternoon coffee if you plan to get sleep later! Thinking ahead can help your body avoid a restless night.

4. Pajamas send a message to your body encouraging sleep: Huffington notes that it may be easier to climb right into bed but wearing sleep shirts or pajamas helps encourage your body to go to sleep. Which means stop sleeping in the leggings you wore to class the same day!

5. Make a list of what you’re grateful for before going to sleep: As collegiettes, we tend to lose sight of what’s really important and find ourselves stressed over the little things. Feeling comfortable and blessed helps lull a person to sleep feeling worry free.

Revolutionize your sleep life with these tips and check out others in The Sleep Revolution by Arianna Huffington which can be purchased on Amazon here:  http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Revolution-Transforming-Your-Night/dp/1101904003/

Pajamas, nightdresses, and even special T-shirts send a sleep-friendly message to
your body. If you wore it to the gym, don’t wear it to bed.
