As a foreigner, sometimes it can be hard to understand what the heck Canadians are saying. Fear no more – I’ve compiled a list of popular Canadian terms and their accurate translations!
1. Tim Hortons
A popular nightclub, open 24-hours.
2. Going out for a rip
Popping out to the local Starbucks for a pumpkin spice latte.
3. Bud
Something to call one’s sworn enemy when their name is too despicable – like Lord Voldemort.
4. Sorry (pronounced: s-oh-rry)
Don’t be fooled by this word’s similarity to the common ‘sorry’ – this is possibly the most offensive insult a Canadian can say.
5. For sure
This one is a little tricky, but the most accurate translation is: “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
6. Loonies & Toonies
Self-proclaimed Bugs Bunny super-fans.
7. Winter
Literal translation: the apocalypse.
8. Depanneur
A private members’ lounge hidden inside a convenience store, so exclusive that they can’t be found anywhere outside of Quebec.
9. Double-double
An uncomfortable double date, in which neither couple is enjoying their selves.
10. Justin Trudeau
A popular fitspo figure, also known as #bumgoals.
Now you’re ready to interact with real Canadians! Good luck, bud.
