In their ten years as an active band, The Beatles put out some of the most iconic songs of all time. This ultimately made them a band whose popularity has spanned decades, despite the short period of time in which they made their music. Although everyone enjoys their classic hits like “Here Comes the Sun” and “Let it Be”, they have many lesser-known songs that are equally as stunning. Here are 5 underrated songs by the Beatles to add to your playlists:Â
Â
- I WillÂ
-
From their iconic White album, “I Will” was released in 1968, and written and sung by Paul McCartney. With folksy undertones and a demure melody, “I Will” is the perfect song to add to your cheesy love songs playlist.Â
- Two of Us
-
“Two of Us” is a song off of The Beatles’s last album, and is a duet between Paul McCartney and John Lennon. With lyrics like, “You and I have memories longer than the road stretches ahead” and “You and me chasing paper getting nowhere,” some speculate this song alludes to the troubles the band was facing, specifically between McCartney and Lennon. Nevertheless, their voices complement one another beautifully, and the song overall is an underrated gem.Â
- I’m A Loser
-
Released in 1964, “I’m A Loser” expresses regret over losing the perfect girl. With its folksy undertone and melancholic lyrics, this song has a Bob Dylan-esque twang that was popular in the mid-60s.Â
- Taxman
-
One of their most overtly political songs, “Taxman” was released in 1966 on the Revolver album. The Beatles’s growing popularity put them in the highest tax bracket in the UK. At the time, this made them required to pay a 95% supertax. The Beatles were clearly unhappy with this, with lyrics like, “If you take a walk they’ll tax your feet”, or even overtly calling out the Prime Minister, saying “Ha, Ha Mr. Wilson”.Â
- Something
-
My personal favourite Beatles song, “Something” is the first song written by George Harrison to make it onto the A-side of a Beatles album in 1969, almost 10 years after the band had been producing music. Both musically and lyrically captivating, “Something” draws you in right from the start with “Something in the way she moves, attracts me like no other lover”.Â
With over 100 songs in their repertoire, there are sure to be some songs by The Beatles that are more remembered than others, but sometimes the most underrated hits are the most beautiful.Â
