All Aboard the H&M Express – Destination: Hollywood?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

The annual anticipation of winter advertising campaigns is most definitely real; leaving nations debating over what sort of festive content will fill all forms of media. We’ve become increasingly used to tear-jerkers, heart-warmers, and, of course, a good old merry sing-song; but a Hollywood hit has been something yet to grace our screens.

Until now. Why thank you, H&M.

Directed by The Grand Budapest Hotel and Darjeeling Limited’s very own Wes Anderson, this four-minute-long ad is sure to leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. In fact, Anderson is no novice when it comes to making advertisements: despite being renowned for his quirky, feature-length films, he has made a fair few adverts already, for products including IKEA and Hyundai – who would have known?! However, I guess this short feature is being gifted to us this Christmas by the talented director (and H&M) whilst we await his next motion-picture.

All aboard the H&M Express. The festive advertisement film, entitled Come Together, takes us on a short journey, with Adrien Brody as our conductor. A simple plot reveals that the Anderson-esque style train has been delayed, low and behold, ruining the passengers’ holiday plans: cue a Christmas miracle. Brody thankfully manages to save Christmas by putting on a festive brunch for all the eccentric personalities travelling on-board. Hooray!

The soft sound of a Christmassy choir singing The Little Drummer Boy in the distance, later replaced by Lennon’s Happy Xmas (War is Over), the announcement of “chocolate flavoured hot beverage[s] with whipped topping,” and the odd glance of some, presumably H&M, garments, allows Anderson to fulfill all of our festive fantasies, that’s for sure.

Come together in style. Now if the need for a new winter wardrobe wasn’t reason enough, the launch of this advertisement has definitely confirmed the thought that it is prime time to take a look at some of the star pieces from H&M’s festive fashion collection – as seen on the runway, or should I say, on the platform.

The festive period is about getting cosy with loved ones as well as dressing up and embracing a little sparkle. This is captured extremely well by H&M’s latest collection which mixes the informal with a sense of occasion.

Let’s take a look.

These velour sweatpants ($29.99) look so comfortable and I honestly doubt they’ll be leaving my legs this holiday season. Paired with this soft ribbed knit (49.99) and some cute fleece-lined, suede booties ($69.99)… long library study sessions come at us!!

This midi, turtleneck dress is a steal (only $39.99) and a definite must-have for the festive season. Wear during the day with tights, this faux-fur lined biker jacket ($59.99) and lined flatform boots ($99.00) for a casual look.

As cold as it gets over the winter season, let’s admit it, we all love a bit of Christmas sparkle. For evenings out, combine this gorgeous pleated dress ($49.99) and some glittery boots ($59.99), with this crêpe blouse thrown over the top. Accessorize with this velour scarf ($14.99). Effortlessly glam!

So, on that note, I guess it’s a big thank you to H&M for a fabulous festive collection and an even better collaboration with Wes Anderson. Brody, himself has remarked that “This story may resonate more than ever at a time in the world where we could all do with giving a stranger a hug” (presumably in light of the recent US election!).

Well, we agree with you Brody. We most definitely agree!
