Local Montreal: Discreet & Fabulous Bars

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Montreal is known for its vibrant nightlife, and the city offers a plethora of fun bars and restaurants. Having returned to the city older and wiser after the summer, you may be interested in branching out from your usual go-to spots – this is where Her Campus McGill comes into the picture! We have scouted out two fun and new spots in Montreal’s Plateau area for your delight and drinkification.

Le A Bar

With a coffeeshop-like ambience, day meets night at the cozy and casual A Bar. Order at the wooden bar and take a seat at one of the few tiny tables. Drinks are classic and tasty and the relaxed setting is perfect for catching up with old friends at a new venue. 213, rue Rachel E.

Big in Japan

The average bar hopper on Saint-Laurent would not be so lucky as to find Big in Japan, tucked discreetly behind a barely-marked red door on the corner of Rue Rachel & The Main. Despite its exclusivity, the place is packed full of hip cocktail swiggers. Through the door, down a hallway and through a curtain is the beautiful bar which boasts curtain-covered walls and long glass tables arranged in a maze-like formation. Overhead, whiskey bottles dangle from the ceiling, reminding patrons of bygone night-outs. With a tuxedo-clad bouncer and high-end, old-fashioned cocktails, this delightful bar resembles a swanky speakeasy (minus the illicitness). Arrive early on weekend nights as word has definitely gotten out about this gem, and try the Pisco Sour cocktail, a sweet, frothy concotion. Japanese treats include umeshu, a plum-flavoured Japanese liqueur and the tuna tataki.

Enjoy your night out & please drink responsibly. Don’t do anything that a classy collegiette wouldn’t do!
