Over the weekend I had six friends from home, including my boyfriend, visit me in Montreal. My dad very kindly offered to pay for a family dinner for all of us and my roommates, making us a group of ten searching for a delicious but reasonablly priced restaurant. Someone mentioned sushi and the idea became a necessity. Most restaurants we contacted were booked up, but Sushi Momo (even with its capacity of just 16) was able to take our group of ten at 7pm on a Saturday night, and I’m so glad we ended up there.
The restaurant is located at 8th Ave, Duluth E in Le Plateau, just a block off from Boul. St. Laurent, and it opened in December of 2014. It is a small, intimate place with fun decor, kind employees, and the best sushi I’ve had in Montreal. The only downside I could think of was that the restaurant does not have a liquor license of any kind, but that definitely kept our bill down so perhaps it was a good thing. I forgot to take photos of the restaurant itself, because I was so focused on the food, but luckily restomontreal has some photos that do the place justice.
Sushi Momo specializes in creative rolls and even offers a variety of vegan and vegetarian options, but most of us opted for their delicious rolls with fish; I, however got their fried chicken roll. Every single one of my friends said it was some of the best sushi they have had, and it is for sure my go-to sushi location for takeout and sit down from now on.
We started out with the complimentary Edamame, and some miso soups and fried tofu (delicious!). Even with ten people each ordering in between two and four rolls, we did not have to wait long before we were all sharing and devouring tons of sushi.
I ordered the Shrimp Tempura, Hawaii roll (shrimp tempura, crab, pineapple, and cucumber), Mango Tuna roll (tuna, mango, avocado, cucumber, and honey), and the Kara age roll (fried chicken, crab, cucumber, and omelette). All four rolls were delicious, with my favorites being the Mango Tuna roll and the Hawaii roll. The next time I go I will definitely order them again, and also try the Tartare roll and the spicy tuna roll.
The rolls were all beautifully plated and equally vibrant in taste. The cuts of fish tasted fresh, and the burst of mango and pineapple in my own rolls were full of flavor. Even the free edamame was bursting with spices, when normally they are just salted.
I took some photos of my friends’ sushi too, and everyone raved about how delicious everything was. Every plate was cleared of food by the end, except for a couple of vegetarian rolls that no one was able to muster up the desire to finish.
In all, I think that their Google Review rating should be higher than 3.1 stars out of 4. The food was mouthwatering and priced very reasonably as far as sushi goes. I highly recommend everyone to take their friends or dates to Sushi Momo, while I myself will be trying out their takeout/delivery services. Check out their menu and website here.
