Why do we cry? We cry because we are sad. We cry because we are angry. We cry because we are happy. But what happens if we cry for no apparent reason? That is perfectly fine, too.
Crying doesn’t need a purpose. Crying is a part of human nature. Crying is something that we hide, when we should be embracing it. Over the years, people have given crying a bad name. If you cry, you are considered a “wimp,” or you are “weak,” or you need to “man up.” None of these are true.
Crying is something that we need to do. Just because you cry, it doesn’t make you a wimp, it makes you courageous. Crying doesn’t make you weak, it makes you strong. Crying doesn’t mean you need to man up — it makes you more of a man.Â
Now, we can cry for a whole bunch of reasons. Maybe a relative died, we’re angry at someone, or someone did something really nice for us.Â
But sometimes we cry for no reason. Just the other day, I was laying in my dorm room in Hoosac Hall, and I was on my phone casually scrolling through Facebook, when all of a sudden, I couldn’t see my screen. Everything seemed abnormally blurry to me. That’s when I realized, I was crying. Tears started rolling done my face, causing my vision to go blurry, and causing a little pain to my eyesight. But I had to think to myself, why? Why in this moment of time am I crying? And when I couldn’t think of a reason, I asked myself, “Is this ok? Can I cry when there is no reason?”Â
Having this thought on my mind, I went on with my day. But, later that night, I realized, I cried because I could. I cried because I just wanted to. I mean, I also haven’t cried before that time in about two weeks. But still, it was the fact that I was crying for no reason is what made me realize that crying is really okay. Being able to cry for absolutely no reason felt great.
Crying is just something we do to express feelings. If we are sad, we cry out of grief, whether it is for ourselves or someone else. If we are angry, we cry to express our violent sides. If we are stressed, we cry to relieve some of that stress so we don’t have to keep it bottled in. If we are happy, we can cry because we are just that happy.
Don’t let anyone tell you that crying isn’t okay. If you want to cry, then cry. No one can stop you. If you want to let it out, then let it out. Being able to cry shouldn’t be a problem, but a solution.
