One of my favourite holiday traditions is wrapping presents – I love the ambiance of the warm fireplace while watching a classic holiday movie. Over the years, I have spent many hours perfecting each gift but have never thought about making this tradition environmentally friendly. Surprisingly, wrapping paper is not recyclable. However, upon intense brainstorming and researching, it turns out there are many great alternatives.
Unsure of how you can make the transition to environmentally friendly wrapping paper? Here is a versatile list of ways to wrap your presents that are creative, simple, and still impressive!
Newspapers or Maps
Although more people are switching from printed newspapers and maps to digital apps, many of us still receive a local paper or have extra copies that are waiting to be reused and recycled. There are many creative and meaningful ways you can reuse these items to wrap your gifts. For example, you can use the cartoon section or an interesting article to complement the person receiving your present. If you want to write a holiday greeting, use an unsolved crossword puzzle to create your message!
Maps might be trickier to find, but someone you know may have an unwanted pile for you. A fun idea is to use the location where you met this person or a place that brings back great memories. This will give the present an extra touch of love.
Pillowcases or Bedsheets
Often, bedsheets and pillowcases never get thrown out or given away as some individuals think they “might need it someday.” If you are ready to let go of your linens, then this idea is perfect for you. Grab your markers or any craft supplies to draw pictures and designs; the more colours, the better. Doo not worry if you are not artistic – everyone loves a personal handmade craft!
Kraft Paper
The wrapping paper most people use during the holiday season cannot be recycled. This includes the shiny, glossy, glittery, and laminated paper – I know, the pretty paper that everyone loves. However, kraft paper is an excellent replacement as it is biodegradable and recyclable. Another perk to using kraft paper this Christmas is the overall aesthetic. While you can draw and write messages on this paper, many prefer the clean and simple look it offers and I could not agree more.
DIY Gift Topper or Decorative Piece
Everyone loves a pretty bow and ribbon to complete the present. Unfortunately, gift toppers are not only bad for the environment but are also expensive. Instead, decorate your gifts with raw materials, such as dried plants, pinecones, or broken tree branches. If you are feeling extra creative, you can make a small bouquet from natural materials – this will impress your family and friends!
Start your sustainable holiday journey this season with these original and impressive wrapping paper alternatives. By making a small change to your traditions, you can educate and inspire others to reduce their carbon footprint!
