D.J. Stephens graduated from the University of Memphis in 2013 with a B.S. in Sport and Leisure Management. By his final season for the men’s University of Memphis Tiger basketball team, he was a fan favorite with his jaw-dropping dunks. He now is playing professionally overseas.

When did you start playing basketball?
“I started playing basketball when I was 5 years old. Â My dad played and I always looked up to him.”
Why did you decide to go to the University of Memphis and what was your favorite part?
“I felt it was a great opportunity for me to succeed basketball wise. Â I knew I was going to receive a good education at any University.” Â My favorite part was the fan support. Also how well we were treated being student-athletes on the men’s basketball team.”
Where are some of your favorite places to visit in Memphis?
“A Grizzlies or Tigers game if I can catch them when I’m home. I have to visit Chings Hot Wings, Central BBQ, Rendezvous and other Memphis restaurants when I’m home too. ”Â
Now that you play professionally, how has your life changed?
“Life has changed in a bunch of ways. I’m responsible for my family and myself. They all depend on me. Paying bills is different because I’ve never had those before. Just dealing with the everyday issues of being an adult.”
Where do you currently playing Basketball?
“I’m currently playing for a team called Zenit in Saint Petersburg, Russia.”
What are the biggest challenges you face playing overseas?
“Being away from friends and family is a challenge. Â Also, dealing with the language barrier, and just the slight differences in the style of European play versus playing back in the states.Â
