Warriors Back on Track

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Merrimack chapter.

Merrimack College hockey has been on a roll these past couple weeks, winning their last three games. Although they started off a little rocky (0-3), it seems as though they are finally picking up their game and looking like the Merrimack hockey team we all know and love.

The Warriors earned their first win of the season on Saturday, October 19th against Mercyhurst. After an upsetting one goal loss Friday night, the Warriors bounced back and beat the Lakers 5-2 on Saturday. Mercyhurst got the first point on the board, but just three minutes later the Warriors respond with a goal scored by Quinn Gould (Jr.), tying the game. Shortly after, Merrimack goals scored by Dan Kolomatis (Jr.), Justin Hussar (So.), and John Gustafsson (So.), make it a 4-1 lead for the Warriors. Mercyhurst answered back with a goal scored by Daniel Bahntge, although it didn’t really effect the Warriors. The final goal of the game was scored by Vinny Scotti (So.), making it an overall 5-2 win for the Warriors. Merrimack goalie, Rasmus Tirronen (Jr.) saved 20/22 shots on net. This win turned out to be huge for Merrimack, giving them the confidence they needed to win their next two games.

Homecoming night, Saturday, October 26th, our Merrimack Warriors took on the Army Black Knights, and beat them 4-2. With a challenge in front of them, the Warriors knew what they had to do to pull out the win. The game was back and forth throughout the first and second period. Army went up 1-0 at the end of the first period. Hampus Gustafsson (Fr.) put Merrimack on the board, scoring on the power play at the beginning of the second period. Not too long after, Army bounced back and took the lead 2-1, which continued going into the third period. The Warriors dominated the third period scoring three unanswered goals by Mike Collins (Sr.), Quinn Gould, and an empty netter also scored by Collins, making it a 4-2 win over the Black Knights. In net for the warriors was Sam Moratta (Sr.) who had a huge game. Overall, the Warriors outshot the Black Knights 43-16, making it a very well deserved win.

Friday, November 1st, Merrimack faced Bentley. With their game looking a lot better, Merrimack’s Quinn Gould scored the first goal of the game halfway through the second period. Bentley responded with a goal at the end of the second period, making it a tied game going into the third. Once again, Merrimack dominated the third period. Hampus Gustafsson scored the game winner on a power play halfway through the third period and Dan Kolomatis scored an empty netter with five seconds left in the game, making it a 3-1 win over Bentley. Rasmus Tirronen in goal had an outstanding game saving 22/23 shots on net.

The Warriors face a huge challenge this Saturday, November 8th here at Lawler Arena against Providence College. We want to wish our Merrimack Warriors good luck, and hope they continue their win streak!
