Getting Back into Your Groove: Starting the Semester on the Right Foot

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

As school begins to pick up and the temperature begins to drop, all college students are doing their best to hold onto any last bits of summer that haven’t yet made their way out. When the sun comes out, we instinctively want to go and relax. When work is assigned, we want to push it off. Though appreciation of summer and savoring of these dwindling days are important, it is even more important that you do not let these things get in your way of academic success.

Here are 5 ways to kick your butt into gear, and get ready for a great Fall semester.

  1. Set goals – Setting goals is one of the best ways to stay on track throughout the semester. It will get you excited to begin working towards them, and even better, it will help with your focus in other areas as well. Having an explicit set of things you want to get accomplished will keep you both motivated and on top of your workload.
  2. Get a fun planner – One of my favorite parts of heading back to school is getting to pick out a new planner for the year. Having a fun, decorated, and trendy agenda makes it easy to keep track of upcoming assignments, club meetings etc., all while looking super cute. Definitely a must-have.
  3. Plan ahead – With your super cute planner, it is crucial that you begin to use it to plan ahead. For me, having things physically written out forces me to complete all of my necessary tasks for each day. Create a daily schedule for yourself around your classes, and use it to keep you focused and on track.
  4. Stay organized – It is incredibly easy to push things off and procrastinate when everything is out of order. Staying neat and organized will not only make finishing your assignments easier, but it will also relieve a lot of stress.
  5. Leave time for yourself – Most importantly, leave time for yourself. Between classes, homework, exercise, sleep, and having a social life, it is easy to overwork yourself without even realizing it. Make sure to leave time each week for yourself to do something relaxing that you enjoy! Give yourself a mini facial, watch a movie, or even just take a nap. As long as you remember to reward yourself for all of this hard work.
