Things To Do This Fall Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

By now we have been in the Ox Box for just about seven weeks. No offense to Uptown, but there’s only so much you can do in Oxford before it gets, well, repetitive. Fall break is the perfect time to spread those folded wings and fly out of town for a little fun. Of course, flying back to the nest to say, “Hello,” to mom and dad is always an option. But don’t feel like going home this break? We don’t either. Here are some adventures to go on instead.

For the Outdoor EnthusiastThe Outdoor Pursuit Center at the Rec is holding a couple cool adventures down South. Canoe on the Cumberland River through Tennessee and Kentucky, or go spelunking in Kentucky’s Mammoth caves. But sign up ASAP, there are only a few spots left for each of the trips!

Weekend Chicago TripAh, the Windy City. Those of us that have been to Chicago already know and love it. If you haven’t been there yet, take time to visit during fall break! It has a little bit of everything – beaches and boardwalks, late night comedy at The Second City, The Brown Elephant for thrift store lovers and the glass-floored Willis Tower. Don’t forget to check out “The Bean” too. Talk about a perfect weekend for Instagram pictures!

Have Your Own Full-Out Fall FestDon’t feel like driving out of state? Grab a couple of your girls and make it the perfect fall weekend. Start somewhere local; Oxford’s own Butterfield Farms currently has an awesome corn maze, as well as tasty, locally made ciders, honeys and breads. Then pick apples over at Hollmeyer’s Orchard in Cincinnati, or take part in Pumpkin Fest over at McMonigle Farms in Middletown. End the weekend with a pumpkin spice latte … you know you want to.

Speaking of Fests … The Fly Free Fest 2014 is happening fall break weekend in Lafayette, GA, a drive that’s only a couple hours further than Chicago. If you want to spend the weekend expressing your creative side, come to this music and arts festival, pitch a tent and listen to some underrated alternative artists. A three day pass is around $125.

Get Scared Halloween is on a Friday this year, and let’s be real – none of us are leaving Oxford that night. Get your fright on early this year and head to one of Ohio’s countless haunted houses. We recommend the Lake Eerie Fearfest, which was ranked in the top 10 of “Great Haunted Attractions” by Forbes in 2013!

Of course, there are plenty more things to do this fall break; this is just a taste. But whether it’s you and your friends screaming at the top of your lungs at possessed clowns during Fearfest, or canoeing through the Big South Fork, make all break 2014 one to remember.
