Why You Should be Paying Attention to the Times Up Movement

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

The Times Up movement was announced early this year in response to the many brave individuals who came forward with their sexual assault and harassment stories that happened within the entertainment industry. 300 plus women in the entertainment industry are banning together to take a stand and invoke change within Hollywood. In this movement the women of Hollywood are partnering up with Alianza Nacional de Campesinas (the National Farmworker Women’s Allegiance) to stand in solidarity to protect women in all industries.

The Times Up movement has been appearing in more popular outlets such as the Golden Globes when everyone in attendance wore black. When celebrities use their large platforms to talk about these issues it can often have a negative connotation because people believe they have it easy. But the issue of sexual assault and harassment does not exclude and talking about it on a larger platform has already made a huge difference. It is showing women everywhere that it is okay to step forward and it must be done to make progress towards a safe work environment.

A common misconception with this movement is that it is only for women in the entertainment industry. The Times Up movement has been sparking conversation and action in all industries, although it may seem just the entertainment industry. It is true that the movement originated in Hollywood, but it is meant to expand throughout all working industries to create safe spaces for everyone to do their job. It is so important to donate and support this organization because these efforts go towards helping women come forward and claim their space in the workforce.

One person’s sexual assault or harassment story does not diminish or invalidate another. Through the Times Up movement women are given space to tell their stories and change the way our society views and treats women.
