Much like as the rest of the country is gearing up to vote for the next president, so is the University of Miami. With the spring semester upon us, Student Government elections are right around the corner. After a record breaking number of votes last year, three tickets have been announced, vying for the positions of President, Vice President and Treasurer.
The first ticket, Empower U, consists of junior Jacob Rudolph running for president and sophomore Austin Eng running for vice president. Their platform consists of ideas such as greater transparency between the administration and the students, expanding programs such as ‘Canes Care for Canes and requiring the library to have copies of every mandatory textbook.
The second ticket is One Team, One U, which includes junior Jason Goldenberg running for president, junior Emeline Savidge running for vice president, and sophomore Andrew Weinstock running for treasurer. Their main goal is to establish a real two-way conversation between Student Government and the student body, while their platform also includes expanding Safe Ride, having rental umbrella stations, and implementing open forum town hall meetings at the Rock.
The final ticket is True to U, with Vikesh Patel running for president, Ashley Piggaluga running for vice president and Morgan Owens running for treasurer; all three are juniors. Their platform includes ideas such as more Hurry ‘Cane shuttles, having care packages available during finals week and improving the approachability of Student Government for students.
The candidates debated on February 10th, with Empower U and One Team, One U, criticizing the current Student Government, and True to You, with their previous government experience, recognizing that more needs to be done. Students will have three days to vote, starting on Monday, February 15th and ending on Wednesday, February 17th, with the results being announced that day at 5:30pm.
