So if you’re as into music and feminism as much as I am, you get almost overly excited when you find a new band to listen to that has a girl of any sort in it. For the past few months, I have been compiling a list of bands with girls in them. This article is about my top five girl bands I’ve found. I’ve got good music taste, I promise.
1. Best Ex
Formerly Candy Hearts, Best Ex is Mariel Loveland’s new project. Their first EP as Best Ex is called Ice Cream Anti-Social and, let me tell you, it’s a wonderful experience to just lay in your bed and listen to it all the way through. My favorite song off the EP is called “Jellyfish”, a simple four-chord song on ukulele.
2. Doll Skin
Doll Skin is a complete 180 from Best Ex. They’re an all girl four piece rock band between the ages of seventeen and twenty-one and they all are phenomenal musicians. Their newest album is called Manic Pixie Dream Girl, filled with anger, love, and every emotion in between. From their song “Sweet Pea” to “Puncha Nazi” Doll Skin does not disappoint.
3. The Regrettes
Here’s another amazingly talented teenage band. The lead singer, Lydia Night, literally just turned seventeen, but her band has played countless shows since they started. Their most recent album has some great punk undertones, but it’s almost like they’re coated in a thick layer of glitter. Feel Your Feelings Fool is one of my favorite albums at the moment. I strongly suggest listening to “Seashore” to kick off your love of The Regrettes.
4. Dog Party
With just a guitar and a drum set, the two sisters that make up Dog Party have a wonderfully unique sound. Believe it or not, Green Day took them on tour when they first came back from their hiatus this year. Lucy and Gwennie Giles have a lot of things to brag about, but if you watch their interviews, they’re some of the sweetest, most down-to-earth people ever. I suggest checking out their cover of Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl”.
5. Sainte
I know, I know, this isn’t a band, but Tay Jardine did used to be in We Are The In Crowd before they split up. Her new solo music has a completely different vibe than WATIC’s music, but it’s still filled with all of Tay’s emotions. She just put out her first album as Sainte within the past few months called Smile, And Wave. Her first single from the album is called “Technicolor” and does not disappoint.
