The past month has been very odd. I’m sure that many of us agree that our habits have completely changed and our lives as we knew it at totally different now. I myself have had my routine flipped upside down and everything has changed in my life. Along with these life changes that most of us are going through, the planet has also gone through some huge changes over the past month or so. Below are some ways that the planet has changed for better and worse during quarantine.
- Less CO2 is in the atmosphere
-
Since everyone is *hopefully* social distancing and staying home unless it is necessary to leave, there has been a lot less CO2 in the atmosphere. With less cars driving, less planes flying, and most companies running less equipment, the planet’s atmosphere has the chance to breathe and clear up. If you take a look outside, you probably can tell just how green everything looks!
- Reusable DishwareÂ
-
Unfortunately, if you are someone who still goes through drives thrus such as Dunkin’ and Starbucks, they wont let you use reusable dishware for your drinks. Obviously, this is for health reasons and COMPLETELY understandable, but it is something to be aware of. If you are able to make coffee/tea drinks at home, try to make them at home most days of the week and only go out for those drinks for a special treat. This will help you do your part by creating less waste during this time.Â
- Household Cleaners
-
So obviously this virus is a big deal and sanitizing your house and things before you touch them is SO important! But think about all of the supplies that you use. Many of them do not break down easily (like sanitizing wipes) and others contain harmful toxins that can hurt animals and the envirionment. All of those products are going to landfills after you use them one time, so try and purchase eco friendly sanitizers when possible. I know that supply is low in some states, but if you can get ahold of these products, please do!Â
- Waiver for Relaxing Regulations
-
Companies have to meet certain standards from the EPA to continue operations. Unfortunately right now, those regulations have been relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic for an “undetermined amount of time.” The New York Times says, “The agency will not issue fines for violations of certain air, water and hazardous-waste-reporting requirements.” This is not great for our environment and also something that is mostly out of our control as citizens. Just be aware during this time that some companies may be getting away with pollution and will have no consequences for it.Â
Though some good and some bad, the pandemic is certainly affecting our environent. Hopefully when we get back on track, we continue good habits as the negative hopefully subside with the pandemic.Â
