Dungeons and Dragons is an exciting role-playing game (RPG) where you and your friends can craft an entire world built on nothing but imagination. Together, you can influence the plot and create exhilarating situations for your entire cast of wild and fantastical characters. Regardless of your familiarity with the game, if you enjoy story-telling and the essence of autumn, then this is definitely a game for you. As spooky season approaches, you and your friends can develop a short (or long) campaign based around Halloween, the occult, ghost stories, and more. You Dungeon Master/Game Master (DM/GM) can guide you through some fun and scary adventures. If this sounds interesting to you, I’d love to share some ideas for one-shot Halloween homebrews:
- Haunted House Dare: This would be super easy to do as there are various undead creatures already in the DnD universe complete with full background information and stats. With a modern twist, have your players develop 80s characters who are dared to spend the night in the local haunted house for a reward of ALL the Halloween candy in the neighborhood! You could come up with plenty of shenanigans and combat sequences for your players in this scenario.
- Â Vampire Woods: This is another easy campaign as vampires and other similar creatures already exist in the DnD universe. You could have a similar premise to the haunted house one, where your players are expected to survive a night in the woods or some desirable prize.Â
- Halloween Movie plots: This could be a longer campaign that could take a whole night to complete. You can take the plot of your favorite Halloween/horror movie and adapt it for DnD. Create new twists and turns and live out your “what-if” endings with your players. As an extra-fun game bonus, encourage your players to really pay attention to the course of the plot and reward the player(s) who guess the movie title with extra candy or spooky-themed snacks!
Now, you may be thinking this all sounds great and fun, but you’re wondering where to even get started and you’re concerned because you don’t even have a set of dice… Don’t worry, you can use Roll20 and have players join on their phones or have them bring their laptops. This website has all you need to set up the best game without you having to go and buy anything for it! You can also follow this link to open a PDF to the most frequently used edition of the DnD handbook to get you started. Happy haunting!
