What’s New for Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

Crisp, clean air. Crunchy leaves under foot. Pumpkin pie. Oh, yes. Fall is almost here, and with it comes all the wonderful things that autumn always brings about.

But most importantly, of course, it’s time to break out the fall wardrobe. Cute boots, stylish coats, comfy sweaters, and everything else awesome about cold weather clothes. To keep your campus style up-to-date, keep an eye on these new trends so you can strut down George Street in style.

This fall, the uniform look is swinging back into on-the-front-lines action. With its many buttons, its sharp lines, and a hint of masculinity, the uniform-style jacket has a certain tough girl look that is fun to play with, and, if worn right, can still be feminine. The key to wearing uniform-style clothes without looking as if you stepped straight out of boot camp is to soften those sharp edges, according to InStyle magazine. Lace or flowing skirts should do the trick.

Fortunately, the full skirt is in this season, to help balance out your pea coat. Full skirts are great transitional pieces, especially for those headed for job interviews in the near future: it isn’t a pencil skirt, but it still has feminine qualities without being too girly, and it’s professional enough for the workplace. To work these best, accept your body type; slender waists can rock any kind of full skirt, but curvaceous ladies may want to look for fabrics such as silk and, unexpectedly, neoprene, to get the proper flow, says InStyle. Also, for those ladies with hips, check for pleats that start a few inches lower than the waist for your perfect fit.

To be comfortable on the chillier nights out, Glamour recommends dressing up those comfy sweaters with skirts and printed pants. It is best to keep your colors similar, however, so that the pieces make a cohesive outfit.

And though winter might be creeping up, as these cooler nights remind us, keep bright colors in your wardrobe: shoes, coats, and purses in bright reds and neon pinks can add cheer to a dismal day. To make this look appropriate, add black, according to Glamour, but make sure that you balance the black-to-color ratio.

Last, but not least, show your school spirit in chicer style than a MU sweatshirt. The combination of black and gold has hit the fashion scene this fall. This combo achieves greatness by bringing together a bunch of vintage styles, including “Renaissance, hippie, Asian, and modernist influences,” says InStyle. The best way to wear this look is to let gold do the talking, and do not bring any other colors into the mix.

Whether you are in the classroom or out on the town, these trends will stand out amongst the crowd (particularly if you choose a neon pink coat) and keep you looking fashionable even as coat-wearing weather comes to cover up those sweet cardigans.
