10 Must-See Movies Coming Out This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

To kick off some summer excitement, Her Campus Mizzou wanted to share some exciting movies coming out this summer. There are several films receiving hype before their release, but these are the ones that seem to be at the top of the list.

1. The Other Woman – It just came out!

This is a comedic story about the perils of cheating. This is especially true if you do it multiple times… and to multiple women. Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton embark on a hilarious journey to teach the cheater a lesson he will never forget.

2. Th Amazing Spider-Man 2 – May 2

Andrew Garfield makes his reappearance as Spider-Man this May. This time Garfield is battling Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti, playing Electro and Rhino, respectively. There has been a lot of speculation about whether this movie will answer the questions surrounding Peter Parker’s past. And, of course, everything seems to revolve around the ever-present OsCorp.

3. Neighbors – May 9

A battle between Seth Rogan and Zac Efron is what you will find in this comedy, where family is pitted against fraternity. These two groups seem so far apart in reality, but in the movie they are next-door neighbors. Rogan’s character is a new father that, with his wife’s help, tries to teach Efron’s frat who rules the neighborhood. This battle of wills turns into a full on prank war that you will not want to miss.

4. X-Men: Days of Future Past – May 23

This next installment has garnered a lot of excitement due to Wolverine being sent to the past to reconcile The Professor and Magneto to save the mutant race. There have been hints that Storm, Kitty and even Cyclops are returning for this movie. It cannot come out soon enough for all of the mutant-lovers out there.

5. Maleficent – May 30

This movie has a lot of people talking as well. Have you ever wondered about what truly drove Maleficent to curse Sleeping Beauty? The film teases viewers with a trailer that alludes to a back-story bigger than could be imagined.

6. The Fault in Our Stars – June 6

This movie is based on New York Time’s No. 1 best-selling novel written by John Green. The story is a compelling one about love against all odds. As depicted in the book, Hazel, played by Shailene Woodley, and Gus, played by Ansel Elgort, meet at a cancer support group. Gus is a former basketball player that now has a prosthetic leg, and Hazel is struggling with cancer and living day-to-day with an oxygen machine. The film promises a sweet love story that will tug at your heartstrings as it discusses real-world hardships.

7. 22 Jump Street – June 13

Jump Street characters Jenko and Schmidt are ready for another adventure, but this time they are heading to college! Oh, and there is a hilarious cameo from the previous movie. (Hello, Dave Franco!) Our two heroes set off into a world where they seem, once again, to bumble through a social scene for which they are entirely unprepared.

8. How to Train Your Dragon 2 – June 13

Hiccup and Toothless are off having more adventures, and this June we can go along for the ride! This time they find an ice cave full of wild dragons… What could possibly go wrong? Teaming up with a mysterious Dragon Rider (hinted in the trailer to be Hiccup’s mother), Hiccup and Toothless have to fight a dangerous enemy.

9. Transformers: Age of Extinction – June 27

This movie has all of the action of the previous ones, but none of the previous actors. Mark Whalberg is the big name in the fourth film. Whalberg finds a junk-truck that he is going to use to make money for his daughter’s education.  Everything comes to a head when he realizes he has Optimus Prime in his garage. This discovery leads to Autobots, Decepticons and paranoid government agents descending on his family. Let the action begin.

10. Sex Tape – July 25

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel team up for a romantic comedy about the dangers of technology. The husband and wife in this film find themselves taping their sexcapades in hopes of spicing up their sex lives. Instead, they find themselves scrambling to round up all the iPads they gave away as gifts after realizing their sex tape ended up syncing to the iCloud. Diaz and Segel promise a hilarious warning about the dangers of mixing your sex life with technology.

And because we all love J-Law…
