Post syllabus week, the excitement of the new year, is slowing down. The struggle to not binge watch Netflix and order Gumby’s everyday is very real.
Here are 15 ways to make this semester the most kick-ass it can be:
1. Actually go to class
I know as an upperclassmen, it’s pretty easy to slip into skipping class, especially the ones where the professor doesn’t take attendance. But in lecture, professors sometimes cover topics not on an uploaded PowerPoint, and randomly give extra credit. Something as easy as going to class can save your grade.
2. Join an organization
College is definitely what you make it. Since we go to a huge state school, there’s pretty much a club for anything. There’s a cupcake club, Tango club and even an organization that provides support and raises awareness for students with chronic illnesses! Check out a list of campus organizations here.
3. Look for an internship
When you declare a major and get in the school you want, you get notified about different events and opportunities through the school. Take advantage of this and don’t regard it as spam, because these are opportunities that get filled fast and it’s a great resume builder.
4. Apply to study abroad
From what my friends have told me, studying abroad is a phenomenal time. My friend has a German minor, went there for a summer, and while there knocked out a few credits.
5. Go to a Guest Lecture
Another benefit of going to Mizzou is te really great guest speakers we attract. Last year we had Common and Jane Goodall come and speak. One speaker to keep your eye out for this year is Dr. Alison Pischedda, who will be speaking about the relationship between sexual selection and sexual conflict. Click here for a full calendar of events.
6. Go to True-False Film Festival
One of the really neat Como things to do.
7. Sign up for a class at the rec or get a Tiger X pass
It’s always great to work out. It’ll relieve you, let you get a better night’s sleep and make you feel more put together.
8. Take advantage of the Student Success Center
There’s absolutely no shame in getting help with a class. The really great thing about the Student Success Center is that it’s local (in Lowry Mall across from Ellis) and free with open sessions! Check it out here.
9. Befriend a Freshman because SWIPES
I don’t know about you all, but buying groceries and cooking for yourself isn’t exactly what it’s cracked up to be. Right now, I’m literally down to one frozen fish stick in my fridge. Nothing is better than free meals and junk food. I can’t explain how much I miss the birthday cake ice cream from Dobbs.
10. Get out of your comfort zone
There’s always thinking that you can do something tomorrow or next week. But as I said before, college is what you make it. You’ll never get another four or five years like this. Do something you’ve never done; meet someone new or get uncomfortable. Don’t leave for tomorrow what you can do today. You don’t know where it’ll take you!
Okay, enough cheesiness. Seriously though, take advantage of everything Mizzou has to offer.
