Fall has officially begun, and I’m sure you’re just as ready for sweater weather as I am. We all know the typical fall-style trends that resurface every year—sweaters, boots, flannels, etc. But, here are some ways designers have been adding more interest to those trends for their fall/winter 2020 season collections, and styles you can incorporate into your wardrobe to add something new.
This season, many designers have had strong equestrian themes throughout their pieces. Many lines include equestrian style boots paired with fitted suits, seen in collections from designer brands Tory Burch, Brandon Maxwell, and Chanel. An example of this style is look 6 from Tory Burch’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection.

Another common equestrian themed item is found in the handbag department. Many saddle bags are featured in lines, typically in browns and tans. The Polo Ralph Lauren leather cross-body bag is a prime example of a saddle ball featured this fall.

A more modern take on skirt suits has become a popular trend. These skirt suits have been revamped, featuring mini skirts, cropped blazers, and bright colors, often paired with the aforementioned riding boots. Brands Eckhaus Latta and Oscar de la Renta featured skirt suits, specifically in Eckhaus Latta’s look 24 and Oscar de la Renta’s look 6. These skirt suits come in colors that pop and add brightness into your everyday or workday wardrobe.

Chains have made several appearances in garments on the runway, being parts of dresses, shirts, pants, and jewelry. Look 11 in the Off-White fall/winter 2020 collection features a chain around the hips of a white dress, along with chains being featured on the shoes.

Another recurring style is fringe. From jackets and shirts to skirts and dresses, fringe has been a common feature in many ready to wear lines for fall/winter 2020.
Fringe was seen throughout many looks in Prada’s collection, used on almost all types of garments possible, for example in consecutive looks 16 and 17.

Ponchos and caped pieces made many appearances throughout the fall/winter 2020 collections as well, some including fringe and shag textures. Typical fall colors and patterns, such as yellow, orange, plaid have been featured in these pieces. Examples include look 8 from Gabriela Hearts fall/winter 2020 collection and look 8 from Michael Kors’ collection.

The final recurring trend from runways that I will mention is the use of leather. Many trench coats, boots, and gloves seen on runways were made of leather. The colors stayed on the darker and neutral side, with tans, browns, greens, and more. This trend is seen in Gabriela Hearst’s fall/winter 2020 collection in looks 25 and 26.
