I’m a sucker for a DYI project, especially one involving homemade beauty products. I’ve come across baking soda recipes and always wanted to try them. I was a little skeptical because I’ve tried other homemade concoctions before (washing the avocado out of my hair was not worth it). But these were actually pretty cool.

Face Scrub
Mix three parts baking soda and one part water and rub on face. It’s a great exfoliator and leaves your skin feeling really smooth. I found this recipe on Pinterest. It showed a picture of Lauren Conrad, and her skin was “glowing.” Although I didn’t quite look like LC, I my skin did seem smoother. If you try this recipe, make sure to mix the ingredients well. Also be sure to moisturize. Just don’t exfoliate too often, particularly during the winter, because your skin will dry out.

Teeth Whitener
Baking soda is great for whitening teeth. If you can get over the taste, it’s worth a try. I drink a lot of coffee, so I was happy to see my teeth look brighter. Some recipes suggest mixing it with your toothpaste to intensify the results.

Shampoo
The water in Columbia does major damage to my hair. I end up putting a lot of product in it just to tame the frizz. I mixed a sprinkle of baking soda with my normal shampoo, and my hair felt squeaky clean after.

For only .64 cents at Wal-Mart, I’d say this was a worthwhile beauty experiment!
