As promised, here’s a follow up article for beginner’s noting the most harmful chemicals found in everyday cosmetic and skincare products. While they may seem harmless at first, prolonged exposure to these ingredients can cause harm to the body. Be mindful of these toxins when shopping for both skin and beauty products:
Parabens
Parabens are typically found in eye makeup, moisturizers, and hair products (such as shampoos). They are known to disrupt hormones in the body and have been linked to breast cancer. When shopping, look out for ingredients that contain the suffix “paraben” such as methyl paraben, propyl paraben, butyl paraben, and ethyl paraben.
Sulfates
Sulfates, while thought to be only exclusive to hair products, are actually found in dish soaps and floor cleaner. While the effects of this one aren’t life-threatening, it will wreak havoc on the health of your hair. Sulfates are known to completely strip all of the moisture from your hair, including natural oils. Using this routinely leads to brittle hair that lacks moisture and excessive breakage. Look out for sodium laureth, myreth, or lauryl sulfates. Try switching to sulfate-free shampoos or opt for shampoo bars that use natural oils as their base.
BHA
Butylated hydroxyanisole (known as BHA) is largely used in product containers, perfumes and body lotions. Known as a carcinogen, long-term usage can lead to stomach cancer and liver damage. Watch out for BHA or BPA when purchasing skin products or the latest perfumes.
Phthalates
These little guys are banned in cosmetics across Europe but are found in our makeup, fragrances, hair and skincare products. Phthalates have been linked to cancer, fertility problems and hormonal imbalances. Look for DEP, DBP, DEHP and fragrance when checking labels.
